Ranting

Why?  Seriously, why?  I want to know.  Why do you people insist on torturing me?  I don't get it.  I thought we were friends.

Your word verifications.  They are torturing me.  TORTURING ME!  Do you know how long it takes me to not only read the obnoxious things (seriously, why do they have to be so blurry???) but then type them up correctly?

I've mentioned before how these captchas are hellacious for a person with dyslexia, but you don't seem to care.  WHY?  Don't you love me anymore?

Alright.  Fine. Maybe you still love me.  Perhaps you've just forgotten how to turn it off.  Well then, we are both in luck because I've written out instructions to help you out.  Because, I love you, ya know.

I want to leave you comments.  I really do.  But sometimes when I see that you have those horrendous word verifications I just don't know if I have the energy (or time) to deal with it.  There are times when I've had to refresh the captcha a dozen times just to get to one that I can read.  AND THEN, I still have trouble typing it up.

Do you really get that much spam?  I have never used word verifications and I think I have only gotten a handful of spam (and mostly advertisements).  And they were all on really old posts.  I deleted them.  End of problem.

Comment moderation I understand.  I completely get that.  Especially if you have crazy ex friends or ex boyfriends or family that like to leave hideous comments.  I get that.  Moderate and approve all you want.  But the verifications?  They gotta go.

Seriously, friends.  I hate to be a hag, but ya gotta help me out here.  I don't know how much more I can take.  Please.  I am begging you.  Turn off the DAMN captchas.

*ahem*

Please.

And, thank you.

And, I love you.

Carry on.

Oopsie. I am guilty of this. I turned it off. Please forgive me. And I love you too.....

Oh, I wish I could turn it off! My service (Squarespace) turns them on randonmly, so I'm not sure if you ever got those on my blog...I hope not.

Standing ovation!!! Applesauce!!
I only deal with word verification when I have a close relationship with the blogger (and even then it irritates the crap outta me). If I visit a new blog and see that - I'm gone, never to return!!
And you hit on exactly why I unfortunately HAVE to moderate my comments. =( Wish I didn't though, but I'm glad you understand!

Done!! :) I didn't realize it could be such an issue, and I get spam anyways. But you are right, moderating comments solves that anyways so no need for the extra step!

Do i have word veri? I can't honestly remember if I set that up or not? They are so obnoxious when using an iPad, thanks to autocorrect.

Haha! Well said! They drive me crazy too and completely put me off commenting on blogs because it's so much time and effort! Glad I'm not alone in this.

I think of you every time I see them. I was getting a lot of spam, a lot, and it ended as soon as I stopped allowing anonymous comments. No word verification needed. Thanks for the reminder. I do not have dyslexia, bit I hate them too!

Haha! Y'all are awesome. I was a bit worried I was too harsh in this post, but I'm glad you get it was a tad tongue and cheek.
Yay!
Thanks, friends!

Dawn- Thank you for letting me know that. I had suspected that was the case because a few bloggers I read use the same service and I always see it on their blogs as well.

I'll put up with it for you. ;)

thank you, thank you, thank you. I couldn't have said it so well. Drives me crazy too. I actually told someone when I left a comment for them that this was the last comment I was leaving on their blog because of the word verification (they had word verification and comment moderation). When she read the comment, she emailed me and apologized; didn't even realize she had word verification and removed it.

I set up on my settiings comment moderation for comments 14 days or older and that does catch a lot of spam. Its easy to remove a comment too if a spam one slips in.

thanks for your public service message :)

AMEN!

Half the time I can't even read the damn things and give up on the second attempt! So frustrating.

AGREED!!!! And now what's with not being able to upload pictures from your computer? They have to be through Picassa? ugh.
love your new fresh blog page verra nice.

Kat said...

Karen- WHAT???? I didn't know that about the pictures. Since when? I just uploaded a picture yesterday from my computer. I hope we don't have to go through Picasso. I have to check into that.

Many of us, especially with compromised eyesight, have ranted on this for years. The rule is you try twice and then go on and no longer worry about commenting if it fails. I have blogger approval for anything older than two weeks and that works just dandy. Only a few of the creepies have sneaked through and those get deleted in short time. They ALWAY lose in the end...no one goes to their website, so not sure why they keep spamming. We are members of your club, babe!

Crap--did I forget to take mine off? I have to put it on every now and again to get rid of the spam comments...

Well said, Kat - I didn't even know what those nasty verifications are called, but I have SO much trouble with them (my eyes are old after all). Some people have both the word verification and comment moderation - I don't get it. Wouldn't moderation be enough. See - you've got me started.

I'm with you on this one. As you may recall I've ranted and pleaded previously, also. It did result in many of my visitors telling me that they got rid of theirs. Here's a hint for you. For those folks for whom you have failed to reach or convince, the two part capcha can be a bit easier than I first thought. There's only one of the two words/numbers that they're hoping you'll recognize. The other one is an unknown set of characters. If you get the clearer one of the two correct, it hardly matters what you type for the other. I know that defeats their purpose as far as what they're trying to do (which is have US decipher difficult characters) but truthfully, I don't care as long as I get through their stinking word verification. Anyway, your mileage may vary on that.. but most of the time, as long as you correctly type whichever of the two is more clearly written, you should be okay.

Hilary- That is GREAT to know! Thank you!!!!!!!

this most recent incarnation of the word veri has made me crazy as well. i'm not dyslexic but those things are damn near impossible to decipher.

Ha ha, I didn't even think about them being on my blog. :) All fixed. :) Funny thing is I hate those too, and have the hardest time with them! I've given up on commenting before, couldn't figure out a single one! I already have very little time to blog, or read other blogs, so who wants to waste time on those stupid things!!!

Words To Live By

Be grateful for each new day.
A new day that you have never lived before.
Twenty-four new, fresh, unexplored hours to use usefully and profitably.
We can squander, neglect, or use them.
Life will be richer or poorer by the way we use today.
Finish every day and be done with it.
You have done what you could;
some blunders and absurdities crept in;
forget them as soon as you can.
Tomorrow is a new day.
You shall begin it well and serenely and with too high a spirit to be
encumbered with your old nonsense.

-Ralph Waldo Emerson
