Thanks to the unusually warm weather we've had this week we were able to get out of the house and get some fresh air. The boys were so thankful to finally be outside again. We still don't have any grass around our house, and since the mudhole of a backyard was off limits, the boys were designated to the front driveway. The driveway was a lot of fun, but after watching Joey have a blast speeding up and down the cul-de-sac Tommy decided that he was going to learn to ride his bike before his 5th birthday. And once he sets his mind to doing something it is as good as done.
Tommy talked his daddy into taking the training wheels off his bike and sawing part of his bicycle seat off so that he could finally touch the ground with his tippy toes while on his bike. After the bike was ready it was sheer determination that got him to his goal.
No matter how many times Tommy tumbled off that bike he would pick it up, get back on, and tell us, "I'm just gonna keep on trying! Just keep trying! Just keep trying!" He remained so positive and so focused. I was incredibly proud.
It really didn't take long and he was off on his own.

Oh wow! I love hearing children being so positive. My oldest has a tendency to get frustrated trying to learn new things because he's a bit of a perfectionist. I haven't any idea where he got that from. ;) So I have had to work really hard with the positive talk, and now he will often say, "I tried my hardest mom" with a big smile on his face and I just love it. Amazing that Tommy is riding around with out training wheels...Banden will be 5 in September and he still has a hard time WITH training wheels. He'd rather be reading what can I say.
We should all take a page out of his book and be that determined.

Woohoo! Way to go Tommy! When you said just keep trying, just keep trying. It reminded me of Finding Nemo when Dori sang, just keep swimming, just keep swimming! Ha! Hope y'all have a great weekend filled w/ tons of bike riding!
I remember my oldest wanted to learn so bad but was afraid of her big bike we bought her for her b-day but she learned with her little bike we were trying to replace.. and the younger one had talked me into taking hers off a few weeks before we got her going by her self..
its amazing how each child is so determined to do what they want and willing to do.. Happy Mommy moment Kat... Just wait till Grace gets to that point...LOL....
Riahli- That is exactly how Joey is. He is a perfectionist too and he gets SO DOWN on himself if he isn't immediately good at something. I'm the same way, so I get it. When Joe was learning to ride his bike he would get so mad and just throw the bike down and run away. Poor kid. ;)
Hattie- Ha! That is where we got the saying from. We took "just keep swimming!" and switched it around to get the boys "happy" about trying. We tried doing that when Joey was learning to ride his bike, but Tommy is the one who really stuck to that saying. "Just keep trying, just keep trying!" :)
He's not even mine and I feel weepy. Crap. I'm going to be a basket case when this happens with my little boy!
Congrats to Tommy!!! That is such a huge deal. Your street is gorgeous - looked like a very pretty day to learn how to ride a bike :)
Yay! We are working on the whole riding a bike thing with our four year old. right now he has one of those peddle-less bikes...suppose to help them learn to balance (they have used them in the scandinavian countries for ever) then we are going to move on to the peddle bike. Your son seems to be doing awesome!
This is one of the great milestones of life!
