Wrapped In Love

PhotoStory Friday
Hosted by Cecily and MamaGeek

When I was pregnant with Joey my mother-in-law gave me a precious gift. It was a beautiful, blue baby blanket that she had knit for Todd when he was a baby. It was the only thing she had ever knit which made it all the more special to me. She was hoping that my son, her grandson, could be swaddled in that same blanket and brought home from the hospital in it just as his daddy had been. I was moved to tears.

Of course, I did use that blanket to wrap Joey in and bring him home from the hospital. I loved the idea of him coming home in his daddy's baby blanket. There is something so romantic about it. And there is something so loving about a mother taking the time to make her baby a blanket that I was inspired to try it myself.

I enrolled in the first class I could find. A crocheting class. I learned how to crochet in a few weeks and set out making Joey his own baby blanket. I found the softest, fluffiest yarn of the purest sky blue. And though I did not attempt any fancy patterns, I was pleased with the outcome of his blanket.

When Tommy and Ben came along, they too were wrapped in their daddy's blanket and brought home from the hospital in it. And waiting for them at home were their own blankets that I had made. Each made with the same soft, fluffy yarn of slightly varying shades of blue.

The boys love their blankets. Occasionally, they'll snuggle up on the couch with their respective blankets. Sometimes they lie in the sunny spots in the sunroom with them.
And sometimes they just like to be goofy with them.
But most of the time the blankets stay draped over their beds ready for use when the mood strikes.

Now I have another little one on the way. Soon I will start yet another blanket. But no matter which craft store I have searched I have only seen three shades of blue in my favorite soft, fluffy yarn. If this baby is a boy I will be searching high and low for one more shade of blue so that he too can have his own baby blanket made my his mum.

Or maybe. Maybe I won't be reaching for blue yarn at all. I really don't know. I guess I just can't imagine that scenario. We'll find out soon enough. And whether baby is a boy or girl, he/she will be wrapped in daddy's blanket on the way home from the hospital. And waiting at home will be the softest, fluffiest baby blanket.

Pink. Think pink!

Oh, how much fun would it be if you finally got to buy that pink yarn!!!!!

Those blankets look cozy and perfect!

I can't wait to find out myself!

Nice job on the blankets! I think using family heirlooms is one of the greatest things we could do as a family. I love having all of my husband's things from his childhood. And he can't wait until his son realizes what they are!

Oh how adorable is that???

I rushed to your site tonight thinking that maybe you had already found out! Hope the weekend passes fast for you, and can't wait to see what color of yarn you get to use this next time!!

Oh, isn't that the sweetest ever!

I love that they all came home in their daddy's blanket and that you made them their own. And, I'm sure one day they will be passed down to their children.

And, I guess it has to be a girl if there are no shades of blue left.

That is a wonderful tradition. My Grandmother's friend made me a nice soft white one. I'm sure you will find the perfect shade when the time comes.

Cassie said...

That is so sweet! A great tradition and I love how they are all snuggled up in them! I still think you're going to need pink yarn :)

That is such a sweet story!! I have my baby blankets but I would love to have one my husbands. I've really been in the mood to learn to crochet lately. I'm planning on asking my aunt to teach me.

Can't wait for the results monday!!!

Ooh! I'm squealing! Can't wait to find out if I'm correct in my guess of GIRL! LOL

And that is an incredibly sweet story...love the blankets!

Oh, Kat, that is so super sweet. Tradition makes life so special, doesn't it? Hmmm, maybe it could be a girl, if the thread is saying so... I'm kind of hoping it's a girl. And thinking I would really like to learn to crochet. Such exciting times!

This is so precious. I love that you made them each their own special blanket, and they all came home in Daddy's. I bet they will cherish those blankets forever. I still have the one my mom used with me :)

I'm am on EGGSHELLS anticipating your appt on Monday!

That's so sweet. I love the idea of them all coming home in Daddy's blanket.. too sweet. If pink isn't on the program, you might want to consider white. :)

Kat said...

Hilary- Yeah. I've thought of other colors (though white is never on the menu because of my dirty boys) but I try to keep things like this fairly even. I don't want them fighting over colors, and I certainly wouldn't want this boy to be the only one without a BLUE blanket. I'll just have to figure something out.

beautiful post, Kathryn! I can't wait to hear what your little one is on Monday!!! No matter what, it will be the perfect "finale" to your family!

Beautiful blankies! I've made blankets for each of my kids as well as my two grandkids. It's funny to me to watch how much better I've gotten. lol.

I really, really hope you get to reach for pink, but if not, you could make it double stranded with one strand blue, one white.

Thinking pink.

Mom24 said...

A variegated blue could be really nice too.

What a sweet tradition! I am hoping for pink! Have a great weekend.

Just reading this makes me want another sweet baby to wrap up! (shhh..don't tell my husband!) Pink or blue that will be a precious baby all warm and snuggled in a comfy blanket!

Natalie said...

here's hoping you get a little pink drama for your life...but if not, maybe you could make boy#4's blanket out of all three of the other shades of blue. like with stripes? just an idea.

MamaGeek @ Works For Us said...

That really is a fantastic idea. I hope you get the pink and hey if it's blue, you can keep it. :)

Good luck on Monday. Here's hoping for a strong, healthy baby!

They are so cute with their blankets. Y'all are just the sweetest family!

So, how many shades of pink did you find that you liked? ; ) Can't wait to hear the big news!!!

Jessa said...

I voted for blue. I just, I don't know. I see more blue. I see lots of football jerseys and baseball games in your future. :) BTW, love the blankets! My grandma made blankets for both of my kids and a friends mother knit a blanket for my son before he was born. It was used so much and loved so well it's basically in shreds now. But I kept it anyway. :)

Living vicariously through you and crossing my fingers for pink!

dawn klinge said...

This is a beautiful tradition. How very sweet!

Jeni said...

Well, you could probably do a blanket and use a verigated yarn couldnt you? Cover all your bases in one swoop that way. I never made any blankets before my own kids arrived but have crocheted a goodly number of them for my grandkids now. None of which have been a solid color that I recall though. I made one for the little guy here (my little Prince Kurtis) using a pale blue and white in a design that is like a giant granny square and like his sister before him, he liked to pull it close by sticking his fingers in the open parts of the design and then snuggle it to his face. But most of the blankets I've made were with multi-color yarn.
Whatever you find, whatever color you decide will be appropriate, it's the love you put into making it that counts ya know.
And as to my prediction -Kiddo, I'm pulling for a girl for you this time! But if it's a boy, you can always try again and have your own basketball team then maybe. (It is only five people on a basketball team isn't it?)

This is awesome. My daughter wore the same gown that I was christened in for her christening...So I understand the sentiment.

I CAN'T WAIT TO FIND OUT WHAT WE'RE HAVING!!!!!!

That is such a sweet idea to have them all come home in daddy's blanket. And all the boys' blankets look so soft and squishy.

Pink, of course!

surely it's monday already...

The blanket is the sweetest thing-- you do lots of cool Mom things, and boy or irl this is one blessed little baby!

Boy or girl:

I need more information before I hedge my bet... let's see, at the time of conception, was the moon full? The week of conception was Todd drinking milk? Was the day of conception a holiday in any part of the world? Have you dreamed of Werewolves or Vampires, and if so, which one did you choose to team up with?

I'll vote, but you kind of sent me in blind here... ;-)

girl not irl. proof read before publishing.

this is the best legacy ever. May it wrap your grandchildren and great grandchildren as well.

I sure wish someone in my family was crafty AND wanted to share their crafty talents! (so if you get bored and all waiting for that baby to come.....)

BEAUTIFUL blankets Kat. They will treasure forever. I am almost positive you will be searching for the most perfect shade of pink. I am sooooooo excited for you and can't wait until you post on Monday. Does our ultrasound facility have WiFi? ;)

My very good friend made my second child a precious baby blanket. I like to think that one day his children will also use it. I think it's sweet that your boys all have special blankets of their own.

I just placed my guess (girl) and it looks like everyone else is with me. I will check back to find out if we're all right or wrong. :)

I love the stories of generations. That's how we stay connected to our past.

What a great story -- and the light in your pictures is wonderful.

Yellow, I vote for a surprise. but I hope it's a girl for you to have a daughter, and then think but you love your sons so much another boy would be a huge blessing. It's a win win deal and I vote yellow! What kind of yarn do you like?

Lindsay said...

That is so awesome....that happened to me too - getting all sentimental and totally appreciating when someone HAND-MADE something for my kids. That's so neat you learned how to do it! I SO want to learn, too! My bet is on PINK yarn. :-)

My mom knitted each of my boys lovely baby blankets... my oldest boy's blanket has a matching 'mommy' blanket, too. :-) I've already requested a new baby blanket in lilacs... a fine alternative to pink, I think.

Good luck at your scan.

Words To Live By

Be grateful for each new day.
A new day that you have never lived before.
Twenty-four new, fresh, unexplored hours to use usefully and profitably.
We can squander, neglect, or use them.
Life will be richer or poorer by the way we use today.
Finish every day and be done with it.
You have done what you could;
some blunders and absurdities crept in;
forget them as soon as you can.
Tomorrow is a new day.
You shall begin it well and serenely and with too high a spirit to be
encumbered with your old nonsense.

-Ralph Waldo Emerson
