Traumatized

I've been traumatized by many a scary movie in my day. It comes from watching far too many nasty movies at far too young an age. My mother admits today that she doesn't know what on earth she could have been thinking to allow her young (I'm talking 6 or 7) year old daughter watch Children of the Corn. I vividly remember being so scared watching it alone on the couch when my mother went to answer the phone in the kitchen that I couldn't move. By the time she got back to me I was covered in sweat. And so was the couch. Or, maybe it was pee. No. Probably sweat.

You'd think that would have stopped me from watching the freaking movies, but it didn't. Of course I went on to watch the crazy Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th movies with my girlfriends at sleepovers. Loving and hating them at the same time. And I watched all the classics like The Shining, Mommy Dearest (okay- that's not a horror movie. but it always scared me), The Exorcist (I still can't watch that movie in one sitting), Psycho, and The Omen with my mom. Every once in a while (especially when I'm alone at night) a scene from one of these horror movies will pop into my head out of nowhere and really freak me out.

But I've found that there is one movie in particular that is haunting me lately, as it has with every pregnancy.

Rosemary's Baby.

The movie itself doesn't really scare me, but there is one scene that seems to have traumatized me. The scene where Rosemary is preparing dinner in the kitchen and cutting up raw meat. Without thinking she takes the raw meat and begins devouring it. She is enjoying it. Loving it. And then she catches a glimpse of herself in a mirror (or maybe it is a toaster...hmm) and she is horrified. She immediately throws up in the sink.

For some reason, every time I am making dinner and handling raw meat (only during pregnancy) that scene pops in my head and I'm paranoid that I might just start ramming raw meat down my throat. I can't get the thought out of my head and so the whole time I'm preparing the meat I'm gagging. It is disgusting.

Now why would that even pop in my head? I mean, it is not like I think I am pregnant with satan's child or anything. Sure, I've called Todd a devil before, but REALLY. I was only kidding.

Whatever the reason I wish it would stop, because I can barely handle the raw meat without gagging now the way it is. I don't need this nasty image in my head.

So tell me. Am I crazy? Shall I seek professional help? Or are you haunted by a particular horror scene too?

Poltergeist. Any blonde child staring at the television screen makes me instantly go cold. Boy, girl - doesn't matter. I have to fight the urge to drag the child away from the TV screen.

As for being haunted by raw meat, and the fear that you'll be suddenly shoving it into your mouth, try to picture more of The Great Outdoors steak scene, where John Candy is trying to eat the giant steak. That will at least give you a comedic reference (and not freak you out as much)!

Aah! Yuck!!! I've never seen any of those movies. My mom was waaaaaay overprotective (thank God) about movies. And when I was old enough to see them on my own I was too scared.

When I'm alone in the house I always think of that movie When A Stranger Calls. It used to be much worse when I was a teen babysitting, but it's still not fun.

You have my sympathies. Eat more chicken. ;-)

I can not handle raw meat pregnant or not...I have issues with raw meat and a pantry full of rubber gloves that I use when handling raw meat. Yes I am a freak! I do not watch Horror movies...ever! I am a scaredy cat!

I am NOT a horror movie person so I don't have that particular issue, but I must say it's rather amusing to picture you in the raw meat scenario. :)

I can't do horror movies. I watched the first five minutes of Nightmare on Elm Street because Johnny Depp was in it when I was in college - I needed to sleep with the light on for over a month! My imagination is WAY too vivid on its own without adding any additional imagery. However, make it funny or goofy like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and I'm all over that!

I don't like horror movies. I started to watch the Exorcist once and had to leave. John and I did go see 28 Days Later at the theater; we had a rare date night and just picked one at random when we got there without knowing anything about it. I kept my hands over my eyes through most of it.

I don't like handling raw meat, either. But I don't think you need professional help unless the issue affects your "quality of life." :)

Ugh. I have a love/hate relationship with horror flicks, too! I do love to watch them, but they visit my nightmares, sometimes. Jason Vorhees.... he loves my dreams (STILL!). And, just so you know... we drive VERY fast through cornfields (have you been to Ohio? I SPEEEEEED a lot!!)... and we always say that if we hit a kid, while in the cornfields, that his SOL, because we are NOT stopping for him... especially if he has flaming red hair and is named Malachi.

I can't do horror movies either. They really screw with my head. I watched Changeling this past weekend - not a horror movie, but horrific all the same.

Since you are thinking about raw meat maybe you need some iron in your diet. Could be some weird psychological thing trying to tell you the body needs something. Just thought I'd take a stab at it. LOL

OMGoodness, you made me crack up over this one. I can't watch horror movies, the ones I have watched come back to haunt me at the worst times. Isn't it wild what the pregnant brain will do to us! If it were me, I just wouldn't be preparing any red meat...on the premise of keeping mommy sane!

I think being pregnant dreams or ideas seem so much more vivid and real. I am not a horror movie fan...I would be obsess about it and think about it WAY too much. I have students who have seen the SAW movies...seriously what were parents thinking.??

I don't do horror movies. I'm still scared by the monkeys from The Wizard of Oz!!

I think we all just have strange thoughts and dreams while we are preggo, it just comes with the territory...

I get reels stuck in my head, too. You're not crazy. Just affected.

Krystyn @ Really, Are You Serious? said...

Nope, you aren't weird...just preggo. I think you are only supposed to worry if you crave dirt and ice!

That image might make me gag on my lunch and I'm not preggo.

When I was pregnant both times I had terrible nightmares. I have always been able to watch the scariest of movies and read the most terrifying of book. But not while pregnant. Even now, I have found my tolerance for things scary is way different. I think it's hormones and just growing up.

The movie that scared me to death was Amityville Horror. While I was pregnant I had MANY a nightmare due to this movie.

I never saw that movie, but I bet it would creep me out. Especially when I was pregnant because I craved meat like it was air and I needed it to survive. I could have eaten it raw on a few occasions... so if I knew that meant I was having Satan's baby I would have been in trouble. Wait... my kid is a terror... hmmm....

Imagine, if you would, that the meat was actually appetizing to you. That happened to me. Luckily I didn't see Rosemary's Baby until after said pregnancy or I might have had real issues with it. But it was kept to just that pregnancy and he is the sweetest little boy with beautiful brown eyes, but his dad can be a bit of a Devil-food for thought? :)

When I was 5 my babysitter watched a Freddy Kruger movie. I still remember a lot of it and it freakes me out.

But maybe you have it backwords- maybe you think of the scene of the movie because the meat makes you gag? Not so crazy.

My roomate in college was so scared of the movie Candyman that she was afraid to look in mirrors after that.

Not too many movies scare me the the Final Destination series of movies freaked me out.

I've never seen the movie Rosemary's Baby but I did read the book, it was a little creepy.

I don't like horror movies but there are a few movie scenes that creep me out and cause me not to sleep at night if I think about them. Hope you can get through this quickly!!!

Kat said...

Wow. I'm surprised so many of you don't watch scary movies. I must have grown up with a sick bunch. ;)

Cyndi- You're probably right. I think it pops into my head cuz it grosses me out so much. Blech.
Kelly- The first time I saw Candyman I had to have my girlfriend walk into the bathroom with me so I could pee. I was too scared to go in by myself. So. Scary.

Amen girl...no need to shrink that head of yours...you are just pregnant! Just wait until you're MY age (she said tapping the floor with her walker) and you're enjoying the thrill that is perimenopause. You want to talk strange thoughts...mood swings...bizarre dreams. Hey, as long as all you're doing is thinking about it I say you're A-OK!

you're not crazy, pregnancy does all sorts of weird things to our minds as well as our bodies.

I haven't seen Rosemary's Baby, but I think that would freak me out a bit to. There were some really scary movies that came out in the 80's. I know some images from them still haunt me.

I am ashamed to admit that I am terrified by the Wicked Witch of the West. I cannot watch certain scenes of Wizard of Oz...I know..I am a wimp. But, you asked!

Anyway, I left you a little blog award over at my blog. I hope you'll pop by and get it or at least take a look! Have a great weekend.

Oh no! That is awful, but I had a friend who while pregnant really thought raw meat looked yummy! She was so tempted to eat it! Now I might be a little worried about my friend.....hmmmm.

I haven't seen a scary movie since Pet Cemetary in 9th grade. Yup, and you guessed it, HATE cats!

Hiya--I'm here because you left a comment on Lime's blog about GREASE, and it was exactly what I was thinking!

First off, congrats on the pregnancy. I'm going to think of you as my neighbor/friend Chrissy, who has four boys and, after huge amounts of trying and finagling, has just found out she's having a girl with her current fifth pregnancy.

Okay, random asides are done now. Anyhow, I am still haunted by SALEM'S LOT and the floating vampires. Thanks for bringing that all back.

I'm a coward, scary movies are too scary. You are having post traumatic movie stress it's a new syndrome of the modern age.

just teasin. Buy a rotisserie chicken.

Cynthia said...

Nope, not crazy...As far as scary movies, I used to be a huge fan of them. Ever since I had kiddos, I have completely lost my taste for them. What's that about?

Kat said...

Jocelyn- Welcome! Nice to see ya here!

Nap Warden- I am the SAME WAY. I could never get enough of the scary movies. Now, I can't remember the last time I watched one. I just don't need those freaky visions running through my head when I'm locking up the house and Todd is out of town or something. ;)

Words To Live By

Be grateful for each new day.
A new day that you have never lived before.
Twenty-four new, fresh, unexplored hours to use usefully and profitably.
We can squander, neglect, or use them.
Life will be richer or poorer by the way we use today.
Finish every day and be done with it.
You have done what you could;
some blunders and absurdities crept in;
forget them as soon as you can.
Tomorrow is a new day.
You shall begin it well and serenely and with too high a spirit to be
encumbered with your old nonsense.
