The city I live in is known as one of the best spots in the world for freshwater surfing. There is an annual surfing contest held here every year and surfers come from all over to participate. It is pretty fun to watch. Especially when our lady Lake decides to cooperate and give the contestants some decent waves. This year the surfers did not have very good waves the weekend of the contest but this past Saturday the conditions were great.

Still, as we were driving by I was pretty shocked to see so many surfers out that day. There had to be over fifty surfers. We quickly pulled the car over and got out to watch for a while. And of course I had to snap some photos too.
The surfers would ride the waves all the way to the beach, walk across the sand to the jetty, and walk out to the pier.
Once they got to a relatively calm area they would climb down the boulders and jump back into the lake's icy waters.
I'm not a fan of being cold, but it looked like so much fun that I think I may have convinced myself to try it someday. Yes, I may freeze my butt off but at least I wouldn't be crashing into coral reefs or get eaten by sharks. It sounds like a pretty good trade off to me.
I guess these surfers think so too.

Wow.. that is cool to see surfers in this part of the world in November. I'm guessing that it's been as mild there this past weekend as we had here.. warm temperatures had me feeling like it was summer too. Great, unexpected captures, Kat.
Hilary- The great weather was a big bonus, because they are actually out there in 40 degree weather too. Now that is dedication. ;)
40 degrees!? Brrrr!! The pictures make it look deceptively warm. Very cool!

Emily- Oh no. The day I took these pictures it was closer to 70 degrees, but they would still be out there if it was cold. I meant I've seen them out there in 40 degree weather. ;)
I think I would prefer to surf in 40 degree weather rather than surf with sharks, but thats just me~
It really looks beautiful, I've never seen it, but your convincing me to come give it a "look see" and check out the lovely Great Lakes Region!

That is so cool. I live near Lake Michigan and I rarely see surfers. I see windsurfing I guess.
two words--wet suit
no freezing buns they even make wet suit booties for your feet.

I love Lake Michigan also. I used to live in Chicago, and I used to roller blade, bike or just walk down by the lake all the time. In fact....my husband proposed to me in our favorite "spot" by the lake! Great memories!! You are so lucky you get to enjoy it every day.
Wow... Lake Michigan is cold in the summer...I can't even imagine in the fall....brrrr!!!
That does sound like fun! I think the no sharks aspect of the freshwater sounds very appealing.

How did I not know this. Though I am more familiar with Lake Superior and I haven't seen surfers there.
I had no idea there was even surfing in Lake Michigan. I just love watching surfers out in the water.
Good for you for wanting to give it a try! I'm not a fan of cold water either, but I've heard the wet suits make a world of difference.
i love lake michigan. I've never seen anyone surf on it, but when I lived in CA I would love to go to the beach and watch the surfers. I had someone offer to teach me how to surf, but then we moved. alas. I never got a chance to try.
