My How Times Have Changed

I think I was a bit misleading in my previous post when I wrote that I was hoping the snow wouldn't call off our New Years Eve plans. Perhaps I made it sound as though we had some fabulous party to go to or something. Nope. Nothing like that.

I used to hope for snow on New Years Eve. Snow always ensured a fabulous time. Back in our pre-kids days Todd and I used to take about 8 or 10 of our best friends up to his parents' cabin to go skiing over New Years Eve. We would hit the slopes all day and then ring in the new year dancing and drinking at the ski lodge's bar. It was a blast.

Things have changed. We haven't done that in years. Now our plans for New Years Eve are slightly different.

Today we will be taking the boys to one of their favorite places. Cabela's. Do you know of it? It is a sporting goods store. But not just any sporting goods store. It has a fish aquarium you can walk through, huge displays of tents and boats, a two story mountain with hundreds of animals mounted around it, a museum off all different animals, a restaurant, a candy store, and so much more. We went to Cabelas once last winter and the boys have been begging to go back. We thought it would be a good day to spend an afternoon there again. It is about an hour from where we live so we needed the weather to cooperate enough to let us make the drive. Luckily, we didn't get too much snow.

Hopefully we will have enough time to hit the fabulous mall that is nearby and then find a fun restaurant on our way home. Would you believe me if I told you I am just as excited as the boys about this little field trip? Cause I am.

When we finally arrive home after that funfilled day we'll throw our own little party with an appetizer dinner. Again, all the boys' favorites. Cheese and crackers and sausage, fresh fruit, chips and dip, shrimp, donut holes, and of course the most important part. Juice in wine glasses! It is very exciting people. I am actually looking forward to it myself. Sure it is no hip-happening ski lodge. But it is my family all warm and safe and happy together. How could I ask for more?

I hope you all have a wonderful Eve and a blessed and happy New Year.

  3. That really sounds like a fun day with the boys, I would be excited too!

I don't know if any of my boys will make it until midnight, it is the only night of the whole year were there is no bed time, so I think Bubu at least will be excited about that, even though I have my doubts about how long he will last.

I'm not all that excited about staying up late, but I am excited about the anticipation of hopefully sleeping in until 7 am. Woo-hoo! I swear though my early bird, the littlest, can stay up all night and still wake with the crack of dawn, so when I say hopefully, I do mean hopefully...

    Happy New Year! :)

  4. Riahli- There is no way I'm letting my boys stay up until midnight. They would be little demons the next day. Ugh. I don't even know if I'll make it to midnight. ;)
    Good luck staying up!

  8. You still have a lot more planned then us. I am hoping we can make it to the countdown. Our family loves Cabelas! The closest one to us is 2 1/2 hours. We want to take our kids to the Bass Pro Shop in Vegas (2 1/2 hours the other way). It's pretty cool too. Have lots of fun and a safe trip.

  16. We will have very similar new years. We drove 2 hours to St Louis yesteday and we hit a Cabela's too!! Tonight we are making fun snacks and pizza and cuddling up to watch a movie with the boys. No big partying for us. We spend all day new years day doing that with all of our family, playing games and eating so we take it easy tonight. I wish I could say my house was back in order though!!!

Glad you are all healthy again at your house. Was Tommy the only sick one??

  27. That's funny... our New Year's Eve parties since having kids always consist of staying home, watching movies and snacking on appetizer-type food all night and letting the kids stay up as late as they can. (Will actually made it to midnight last year.)

    Happy New Year!

  28. Sounds like our kind of day! WE were going to go to the aquarium, but never got out of the house.

It didn't help that we were too cold in our 60 degree weather. I know, I know. But we had a nice New Year's Eve anyway.

  36. I LOVE spending New Years with my family and I actually find these times immeasurably more satisfying then the inevitable build up and let down I experienced before the arrived.

Happy New Year, friend, you have much to be thankful for!

  42. Happy New Year, Sweet Friend!

Here's to toasting with kiddoes -- sparkling juice in a delicately fluted lenox champagne goblet clutched by a chubby toddler's hand! That brings in the New Year with a smiiiiile. How well I remember it. Now they do the pouring, but not the real bubbly, of course. (I prefer the real bubbly myself, however -- cheers!)

  48. How long 'til they're old enough for ski school? We're counting down at our place. Looks like 2009 will be it!

Our New Year's Eve party with the kids always contains silly hats, homemade confetti (with countdowns and confetti-tossing at 8, 9, *and* 10 pm if they last that long) and a huge buffet dessert of chocolate fondue. We get messy pictures every year, but it sure is fun. :)

Hope you are having a wonderful first week of January! -MM

  49. I do know Cabela's but I don't think I get that excited about it. I hate seeing dead animals. It's a quirk of mine. Especially when I am eating. Around here there are steak houses with deer heads, moose heads, buffalo heads that stare you down when you eat. It's freaky actually.
